Failure to Launch: the price of space exploration
Problem
Space exploration is often portrayed as humanity’s greatest triumph. However, behind every success is a dark overlooked history of catastrophe and tragedy. The objective is to reveal the overlooked human and economic sacrifices behind space exploration and engage STEM audiences through clear and concise storytelling.
Solution
This data storytelling experience (a brochure handed out at an exhibition), developed in association with the California Institute of Technology sheds light on the human cost of systemic error, deception, political pressure, and overlooking the signs of truth in space exploration. It highlights how prioritizing political and public relations pressure over safety led to disaster, while honoring the courage of astronauts and engineers who unwillingly sacrificed their lives. It also explores the perils of ambition, from individuals and nations, as a fault. Rather than focusing on a single agency or nation, the project uses data from multiple space programs worldwide to create an international perspective.
